The habit of climbing stairs significantly reduces the risk of early death. This was revealed in a medical study in the UK.

A joint study by the University of East Anglia and the University of Norfolk found that short periods of physical activity can help achieve longevity and improve heart health. The study examined data from nine research reports on nearly 500,000 adults between the ages of 35 and 80.

Along with healthy people, people with heart disease were also included in this analysis. The results showed that the habit of climbing stairs reduces the risk of death from heart disease by 49 percent. Likewise, the risk of death from any cause also decreases by 24 percent.

Evidence has previously shown that regular exercise reduces the risk of heart disease and early death. If you have to choose between taking the stairs or taking the elevator, choose the stairs because it improves heart health, the researchers said.

He added that even short-term physical activity benefits the heart, and it is easy to make a stair-climbing routine a part of daily activities. He said that this habit reduces the risk of premature birth and also protects against diseases like heart attack, heart failure, and stroke. According to the researchers, the results indicate that the more stairs you climb, the greater the health benefits. The results of this study were presented at the European Society of Cardiology conference.

Previously, in October 2023, a study by Tulane University in the United States reported that climbing just five flights of stairs per day can reduce the risk of coronary artery disease by 20 percent. In this study, the data of four and a half lakh people was examined. These individuals were thought to be at higher risk of heart disease due to family history and other genetic factors. After that, the lifestyle and stair-climbing habits of these individuals were analyzed.

The health of these people was evaluated for twelve and a half years. The results showed that climbing more stairs daily reduces the risk of heart disease. People who are at high risk of developing heart disease can significantly reduce it by taking the stairs, the researchers said. He said that there is no need to spend any money to climb the stairs, and it is easy to make it a habit in the daily routine.

They said it is an effective way to improve heart and lung health, especially for people who are not used to exercising.
