A study from Swinburne University of Technology found out how much time you should sit, sleep, stand, and be physically active in a 24-hour period for good health. The study involved more than 2,000 people and analyzed their behaviors, such as sitting, sleeping, standing, and exercising.

According to the research, 6 hours per day are for sitting, 5 hours and 10 minutes for standing, 8 hours and 20 minutes for sleeping, 2 hours and 10 minutes for light physical activities, and 2 hours and 10 minutes for moderate to vigorous physical activities. Minutes are ideal. Light physical activities can include housework, while vigorous physical activities can include brisk walking or gym workouts. The time allotted for different activities throughout the day is important for health, the researchers said.

“We took four important health indicators, like waist circumference and fasting blood glucose level, into consideration and discovered how many hours should be allocated to different activities in 24 hours,” he said. He said that sitting time should be replaced with physical activity, especially light physical activity, which helps to keep blood glucose levels normal. According to researchers, reducing sitting time through sleep also benefits health.

He added that, of course, it is not possible for anyone to reduce sitting time to zero, but one should try to keep it as short as possible or not more than 6 hours.
